My neighbour has 3 bushes of beautiful roses - all very different and has said I can take cuttings - but I don't know how!

Can someone talk me through the process please - in idiot terms - I can grow my veggies, but haven't a clue with cuttings etc!

The best time is when cutting them back for winter take a nice straight piece about 8 - 10 inch long pull off any leaves and side branches and push it 4 inch into the ground and leave it, it should root for the following spring. But dont keep pulling it out of the ground to check for roots or it wont grow any.
