Fuschia

I've inherited a fuchsia bush - probably not horticulturally correct, but bear with me! It's a bit scaffy through neglect, has quite a lot of small, red and purple flowers and looks like a bush to my untrained eye!

I don't know much about fuchsia - eg when/if it get pruned! I'd also like to move it from where it is to another part of the plot, without killing it.

Help!

It doesn't need pruning, unless it gets too tatty, and then cut off the tatty bits. Ideally, move it when it's dormant (like most things).

It's tatty already, really as it's spent quite some time swamped by a broom and a rambling hardy geranium. It's picked up no end since I lopped 'em!

I thought I might have to wait for October, or thereabouts. I'd just like to clear the bed so that I can create some veg beds and was hoping someone would say "tough as nails - shift it whenever you like!" but I didn't really hold out much hope...

OK I'll say it. Tough as old boots. Cut back a fair bit of the top growth, dig it up with as much root as possible - plonk it in a hole in it's new site and water well. Make sure it doesn't dry out until it's established. GOOD LUCK!

Ooh, thank you, RL! Now I don't have to feel guilty if (when!) it dies...

BTW - thanks for the advice TS. I think I might compromise and leave it till last. Work being what it is, it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get enough leave to really attack the plot till October anyway!

You can always 'belt and brace', take cuttings now, to ensure you keep a plant. Fuchsia cuttings are easily rooted in water.
