How deep for a window box?

I was just looking at window boxes on T&M. It says they are 5" deep, but that don't seem very deep to me. Wouldn't I be forever watering? Or is that fine for a window box?

I would make some out of wood, but B&Q is a 3 mile walk away.

You will get away with the smaller anuals and bedding plants but I would suggest a deeper trough if you want grow spring bulbs. Regardless of size you should be watering containers such as window boxes regularly.

So it would be ok for summer stuff, that's good to know as that's what I wanted it mainly for! How about strawberries? Or would edible stuff be a no no?

I've got a small window box sized trough just outside the kitchen door, it hangs on the fence. I have herbs growing in it, for the days when it's too rainy to brave the actual garden.

I was thinking about something like that for the kitchen window

Go to your local pound shop and get some plastic troughs the size you want the window box to be and then make a bottomless box to fit round them/it. then if you get more than one trough you can plant them up and swap them over for summer, autumn& Winter and Spring plantings.

I've got 5 2ft toughs on the fence and providing you water and feed regularly they are fine and they are only 5" deep or so. Ice cubes on the compost in the evening is a good way to keep them moist as they melt in over night without evaporating too much then just top them up when you get up with a bit of feed ( I use either a balanced feed or tomato feed depending what I'm feeding in the greenhouses)
