  • Lilies advice please

I'm more of a "if you can't eat it, I'm not interested kind of girl" but have decided to mend my ways and start to take an interest in our garden! The folk that had it before us were brilliant and we have lots of lovely plants, flowers, shrubs and bulbs -none of which I know a jot about!

We have 2 rhododendrum bushes we need to move (think I'm ok on that score but feel free to advise please) and I want to put them where she has/had some lillies. They are finished flowering - do I cut them down to ground level and then dig up the bulbs or are they tubers?). And if that is what I do, do I plant them in their new place now or wait till some time later - and if so, how do I store?

I think there are also some dailias in the same category - what should I do wtih them?

Thanks fellow grapes - hopefully this is the start of a new love affair with flowers!!!

Hi, if you want to clear the lilies right now wait until the tops have died down a bit then you could just cut the tops down dig them up & replant them where you want them & they should be fine as in most cases they're hardy. If you don't want to plant them straight away you could lift them & let them dry off a little & then store them in paper bags with a little sand or dry peat in them & keep them until spring & then replant them or you could pot them into individual pots now & leave them somewhere sheltered until next spring.
With dahlias it depends on whether you live in a mild area, if so you can dig them up & move them to their new position & cover them with a protective mulch of compost/leaves etc. If you get heavy frosts I'd dig the tubers up after the tops have died down, leave them in a tray to dry off & then store them in trays of sans or dry peat in somewhere cool & shaded. Here's a link to a bit about lifting dahlias.
