Euonymous Cutting Problem

I took some cuttings from a euonymus (sp?) a while back. I have given them a little tug and it feels as though roots are developing. Also, I've looked through the holes on the bottom of the pot and can just about make out a few white roots.

The problem is thus: There seems to be some kind of white 'spikes'/'hair' growing from the stems above soil level, right up to the top of the stem. It kinda looks like a mix between roots and mold.

I've only ever seen this on these euonymus'.

What could it be?

They look like roots - I have once had roots on a stem above the compost surface. Apparently this was because of overwatering whilst I was absent !

Do I just rub them off with my thumb? Or will they sort themselves out......?

I think I may have been guilty of over-watering.........

They look like roots to me also.

I'd leave them to grow down into the soil or whither off. Cut down the watering. Plunge your finger into the compost up to an inch and don't water until it's dry.

Yes they are roots, this is how they would normally root, by layering. If you ever see an uncut Euonymus the lower limbs will trail along the ground, setting roots like your photo.
