  • a question about bulb-planting

so, do I put the pointy end upwards in the ground? (, only kidding)

I have a new puppy this year, a terrier, a natural born digger, and so my bulbs are all going in pots this year rather than in the ground, from where she has cheerfully uprooted them and presented them to me.

My question is, what to do with the pots? I have a summerhouse, where I was planning on putting the newly planted bulbs-in-pots, to wait for spring, but it is very warm in there, even now, and I am a bit worried that they will start to grow. Perhaps I should leave them outside, but with a lid on top, and brick on the lid? (to stop my little digger from unearthing them).

all advice gratefully received (dog training advice too! )

I'm with Fiona on this one!! I would sink the pots into the borders where you want the bulbs to flower, after having bent chicken wire over the top of the pots. I use upside-down wire hanging baskets to keep the cats off newly planted stuff, but that probly wouldn't work with a determined terrier!!

I put chicken wire and bits of old broken canes in my bulb pots to stop the squirrels. First year I did them I lost most of the bulbs as they were dug up, second year I put them in the cold greenhouse but it was still too warm and they sprouted early and were rather rubbish and now find the chicken wire and cane option works well. Doesn't look attractive to start with but as soon as the bulbs come up you can't see the canes and I tend to remove them then anyway.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
