lavender hedge - more like lavender archipelago

My lovely inlaws are trying, have been trying, for a few years to grow a lavender hedge but after planting the several plants, have found that they don't want to 'join up' and they seem to have a series of small, discrete lavender plants in a row. Not entirely unattractive, but not as planned.

any advice will be swiftly passed on and probaly lead to extra special birthday pressies. (This year got a MASSIVE planter and 15 year old bottle of Madeira, pretty good, eh?)

I've found lavender to be quite slow growing for me, so it may just be that.

Are they happy otherwise? They prefer alkaline, well drained soil in full sun. If that's not the case, maybe they're sulking a bit.

They can be very touchy about the amount of sun and kind of soil they get. I planted some in my back garden, which has quite nice soil, and I didn't think was all that shady, but clearly from the point of view of the lav plants it was not comfy, as they just seemed to get smaller and smaller until they died. This year I put some in the front garden, where it is all sandy and nasty, and can get quite hot, and they are loving it and growing like maniacs.

I've got the same prob as I've edged one part of my lottie with lavender which I bought in 6-packs. Apart from the cultural considerations given by other grapes here, one solution may be to take cuttings from the original bushes now with a view to filling in the gaps later. (That's assuming that you don't know what variety they are: like a ninny I threw away the label!)
