  • Plug Plants on strike?

I bought a selection of plug plants for my windowboxes and planters online. Unfortunately when they turned up they were actually mini plugs and completely, well... miniscule.

I potted them up in larger modules and have had them in the GH for around 6 weeks. The Dianthus (which they sent in error) is growing as is the Polyanthus but the various violas and pansies are doing nothing. Any suggestions as to what I can do to help them along?

Threaten them with the compost heap?

I have had the same problem Amanda, I ordered Violas & Pansys expecting "Garden Ready Plugs" as advertised & they were tiny. Don't think I'll bother with winter bedding next year.

Where did you get yours from QOTC?

I got mine from Blooming Direct. At first they sent me the wrong plants so when I emailed them they came back to me very quickly with an apology and sent the correct plugs immediately. Unfortunately when they arrived they were miniscule, I mentioned the size of the plugs in my email as they were much smaller than advertised but they failed to respond to that point.

Is it worth contacting them again - I spent £24 on these plugs that were descibed as Garden Ready' but most certainly weren't and appear to be failing.

            What a shame Amanda.
If those plants are not growing it sounds as if they have been checked somewhere along the line - probably before you got them. They have been not hardened off properly, allowed to dry out or something which has stressed them.
Plants which have been checked can sit for weeks doing nothing before growing on and sometimes they never recover and grow on.
I would certainly contact the company you bought them from and let them know the plants failed to grow.
            Good luck.

Thanks Alice, I am going to give them a call tomorrow rather than email them. I'll report back with an update.

My winter plugs have been awful, too.

The violas have flowered, but they are so tiny you cant see them in the beds.

The pansies have grown and bushed out.......but 3 months later and there are no flowers on any of them!

I can only admire your determination-after tidying up the garden I can't be bothered to grow anything at the end of the year(till January-Finger-Itch)
