Recommend me a rose

Hi all

Bit of a long shot here, but is there a rose that smells lovely, wouldn't mind a bit of shade, and has edible hips (or are all rosehips edible?), and suitable for a tiny space? Bonus would be if I could cut the flowers for indoors as well - even if the stems are only long enough for shot glass or teacup. Are there any that would be suitable for growing up an obelisk in a large pot?

I've googled and found this one, it likes shade and will grow over an arch or up trellis.
All hips are edible, but not all hips taste nice. Also if you use pesticides they can transfer into the hip.

Shot Silk Climbing - a climbing fragrant hybrid tea with large blooms of Rich pink with a touch of Salmon-yellow. Good disease resistance. 6.0x2.0m. Repeat flowering.

Best for sweet scent and edible hips (if you get there before the birds) is the classic thorny hedging rose, rosa rugosa. Smells like a tart's boudoir, big blowsy deep pink (or white if you choose) flowers and has massive (but probably not child-bearing) hips. Don't know how it would cope as a cut flower though. They're cheap to buy too.

Rugosa would be perfect,edible hips and wonderful smell...As for the cut flowers,you should get yourself a pair of thick gloves before attacking them

A friend gave me a Rugosa-type bush rose for the front garden of our old house, it was next to a hedge and faced north-east. It had deep cerise double blooms, and you could smell it from a distance. It smelled good-enough to eat! It was lovely. I wish I had brought it with me...

Rugosa is the best for rose hips - but you will only get those if you don't pick the flowers!
Good scented roses for partial shade? New Dawn, Zepherine Drouhin.

What if I forgo the edible hips, and just went for shade, climber, and fragrance?

Is 'climber' mutually exclusive to 'compact'?

sorry - total rose noob here. I went to the garden centre last Sunday and got scared by the sheer variety!

Oh, I hadn't thought about colour - that didn't even cross my mind! I think for me, fragrance is what it's all about But I think either pink or white.

So you can head to the garden centre, make for the climbing rose section, look for the pink or white ones and go for the less vigorous scented varieties! Simples.
