  • What to put in wall baskets

I mainly only grow vegetables in my garden which is nice as I've always got a bit of fresh produce to use but veggies aren't always the most colourful or attractive to look at.

Last year I had sunflower which added colour but they were mainly grown to distract the birds from my peas and beans!

This year I bought some wall baskets from Wilko's for a nice sum of £2.50 each and plan on having 2 or 3 on the fences around the garden bit I have no idea what to plant in them and whether I should plant by seed or buy already established flowers.

I'm not fussed about colour as long as it's bright and attractive and ideally to attrract the bees and butterflies.

Would love to hear your suggestions and thanks in advance.

I'm planting trailing sweet peas in my half moon baskets what I hang on the fence.
You could plant trailing Lobelia, Pelargoniums, Trailing Geraniums, Trailing Fuchsia, Trailing Petunias. Have a look round the garden centres for inspiration, don't be afraid to ask what the plants are if your not sure, ask if they sell the seed, its not too late to start your own flowers of, its much cheaper than buying them and you get to look at something else that you've grown.

Birds don't eat peas and beans (sparrows may have a cheeky nip at pea leaves in early spring though).

I mainly have violas, ivy and pelargoniums in my baskets, but you could grow trailing tomatoes, lettuce, chillies, nasturtium (edible), etc etc

asparagus peas - ideal for bees and if you leave a few flowers to fruit you will get some fairly strange veg

Maybe the birds weren't eating the beans last year but they spent an awful lot of time perched on or in the plants!

I didn't realise you could grown tomatoes in baskets. My OH loves tomatoes but I only like them if they're blended (i'm weird like that!).

They look really pretty too! Think i might have to have an alternating theme going on or a different theme on each fencing panel!
