Sunflowers hardy?

I didn't think so but on a seed packet I've got it says hardy annual Can You just sow them outside? I always thought you had to do them in the greenhouse...

They do fine sown direct outside - in fact they do best from self-sowings than they do from being started in pots

(the one behind the Singapore flag is self-sown)

However for much better results it might be an idea to start them off in pots and get them growing on big and strong before planting out after all frosts a have gone, i also suggest some sort of Slug defence.

Mice luv the seeds too..........as I found to my detriment!

Some of my best ones have grown from seeds that have fallen out of the bird feeders.

I get ones from the bird feeders too but if I ever actually sow direct they get slugged so I sow in root trainers in the greenhouse an plant out when they get a reasonable size.

I'm going to plant mine in pots first. We don't have any that have fallen from the bird feeders, as a pheasant comes into our garden and pecks up all the debris...

The same pheasant that I suspect of putting a hole in my netting and plucking out my onion sets last night. Grrrrr...

I do mine in pots and plant out when big enough, but I sow them outside, no cossetting

I noticed one of the heads I left for the birds over winter has dropped seeds everywhere. I might shuffle them around a bit and see if they come up before I sow fresh.

Thanks for all the feedback learn something new everyday, think I will try both! The little one has done 1 seed in a pot but think I'll put some in the ground as a backup
