There's a black hellebore although the very deep colouring may fade a little over time it does remain good for many weeks.
Stachys or lambs's ears is widely avaiable with siver grey leaves and has wooly flowers which are mauve pink but 'Silver Carpet' is perennial and s virtually non flowering and makes good ground cover on well drained soil in the sun.
I've got some in the garden. It's slow growing and not invasive, but it is dear.
I've got black viola too, but it needs planting against something white or you can't see it. If you don't mind a splash of pink, there's fuchsia Black Beauty.
And for shade, there's geranium Mourning Widow (which is more of a dark maroon).
I rather fancy the black viola and yes it can go along the white section, so both will stand out nicely. But am I not a bit late now for viola? Unless I buy some in modules from the garden centre?
I love geranium and how they flower all summer long, as well as the lovely green mound that appears early in the year. I bought a pink one some years ago and have divided it up many times, a few in my garden, some at the lottie and many more given to local folk. So yep a black geranium is a must and as the black sections are next to the path, it will soften the edges. In fact I was a little worried that I'd removed my pink geranium from the path edge (to the pink section), so crisis over!
This year I'm not overly worried about a splash of colour in the wrong sections, as I can always move them around once I build up each section. Decided to plant the Black Out lilies I'd bought into pots, as I'm not convinced they are going to be very black, but the pots are black!
Lots of lovely suggestions and ideas, ta very much.
For quick colour, there's a cornflower which is very dark mauve, nearly black. Artemisia has lovely silver foliage, lots of different species. Another viola, Molly Sanderson (I think?) which is black and there's a phormium called Platts Black which does what is says on the tin :-)
