How Do You Kill Berberis?

Title says it all, really.

A friend of mine has quite a lot of berberis. I gather it roots easily

And that's the problem. she can't get rid of it. It comes up all over the place, even between paving stones. She's even tried boiling water and the stuff just won't die!

All suggestions appreciated.

Apparently they are sesitive to salt.........
