Care of Dog Roses

I have been given what I'm told is a Dog Rose and wondered if there's anything inparticular they need care wise.

At the moment it's about 2/3 ft tall with 4 main branches. The branches are quite wide spread and I wondered will these need support? It's in front of my garage where it will be joined by sweet peas and runner beans once my seedlings are ready.

The main branches have leaves on which are all curled up, I'm guessing these will open up over time.

I'm new to roses and am quite excited about having it! Will it need pruning?

What signs of disease do I need to keep a check on?

Have you 'Googled?'

My experience of Dog Roses, is that they like to 'ramble' and outgrow the space they're allocated. They make good hedging plants. Good luck with it.

I agree - Dog roses should be grown in a hedge or in a wild garden. They will quickly throw out stems up to 10ft long armed with sharp thorns and the flowers though lovely last only a short time
