I took several dahlia cuttings which are now appx 12inches all, they have 2 or 3 pairs of leaves but have started to bud at the top of the growing stalk rather than on a lofty branch....if I nip these buds out will they grow on and flower ?

I'm not sure I entirely understand your question, but dahlias are one of the plants that, "the more you cut the more flowers you get". Yes I would take the tip out to encourage the plant to bush out, and produce more flowers.

thanks, I will remove the buds now and hope the plants fatten out and produce more flowers in a few weeks.

Interestingly, I bought individual tubers of pink, orange, deep red and yellow. the pink has produced masses of shoots from the one tuber, the orange the next prolific, then the red, but the yellow is just refusing to sprout, so much so that I went and bought another yellow tuber and that's exactly the same...dormant. I will keep trying and hope they finally want to grow.

Last year my tubers didn't start sprouting till 2nd week in may, mind they had been in the ground over winter.
