Have I made a mistake with Jasmine?

Hey everyone.

We've been busy over the last few weeks getting the garden all planted up and looking good.

We've just built an archway over the stairs that lead on to our decking and I bought two jasmine plants to go either side as they were in the climber section at the garden centre and I loved the look and smell. The tag attached said suitable for growing outdoors and in containers so I thought they'd be ok but after doing some research on the net today i'm now not so sure as i've read that they are more of an indoor plant.

The plant name is jasmine polyanthum.

Will these be ok outside growing over the archway or have I made a really bad choice?

as I understand it, the white flowered ones are rather tender and the yellow or cream flowered are suitable for outdoors. I've got both, and I keep the white in a large pot in the unheated greenhouse until mid april, then I usually take it out onto the patio and give it a trellis to eat. The cream isn't doing much at the moment, but there are little budlets just coming out, so it's just biding it's time.

I hope so although the OH is not happy as he reckons it will set his hayfever off. I'd say the many hours spent on the golf course is probably more responsible for setting it off!!

The ones we have are white flowered and they both look very healthy so i'm hoping they do take to the arch. I guess in the winter I can just move the containers into the greenhouse.

Hi Esmed. Don't know where you are living but I suspect that unless you are living in the south west these won't survive. Saying that I have one in a cold green house that survived this winter where many hardy things died. So I would try Traclhyspermum jasminoides. It has a far superior smell to the hardy Jasmine proper name Jasinum officinale I think. But then again depending on the severity of your winters this cold go in the cold too. There is one called J. Beesianum- got a pink flower very weedy for an arch by a house. What ever you buy try and put it the ground- not in a pot. Best of luck Dincur.
