  • bulb planting

have got a bit carried away and realised i ordered around 300 bulbs to be delivered in the next few weeks. Has anyone got a preference on whether a dibber or an automatic bulb planter would be better. I have never used either and don't own either just don't fancy diging 300 holes! As always thanks in advance.

I had that many (daffs, tulips etc), and just used a hand trowel: I did it over a couple of days though

I got a cheap dibber a few years ago and I don't use it to plant bulbs, find it better to use hand trowel. Dibber is quite good for seedlings though

i was thinking dibber or bulb planter as my trowels just break so quickly. The curse of clay soil i suppose. I could always do a trench and plant everything in rows.

do not own a bulb planter but have used them in the past and to be honest, they are fiddly and slow (and seem to be very prone to breaking, or maybe I'm too rough with them). I split clumps and transplant bulbs by the barrowload at two of the gardens I work in at this time of year (snowdrops just now, daffies next month) and I just use my spade to slice open a groove in the soil to the required depth, drop in the bulbs and close it over again.

I use a dibber, purely because I got one from poundland for, you guessed it, a pound! It's good, brought it ready for planting on my leeks but have used it for pretty much everything but so far!
