  • Japanese Aneome - has anyone grown it from seed?

    Says it all really

I 'snaffled' some of the seed heads last year, (or at least I think I got the seeds - a ball of cottonwool where the flower head had been,) and have been trying to grow them this year but to no avail.

I've put the 'fluff' under and on top of the soil but neither seems to be working.

All the plants I've seen for sale are 5 - 8 pounds per plant so they're a little beyond my means at the mo so any advice / help is very gratefully received.

    Thank you muchly.

Nope - I think they are a hybrid and thus the seed doesn't come true anyway....if it is even seed and/or not sterile.

Root cuttings or division only....in the autumn when the flowers have died back.

So, although the plants are £5 - if you plant into a big pot, and let it flower this year you could take lots of cuttings in the winter and get more plants from them for next year and beyond.

None of our seeds that are left to fly about have ever produced a new plant - the only new plants are from the originals bulking up.

I have not heard of this being propagated by seed tbh. The usual method is, I think, propagation by root cuttings later in the year.

Our Zazen got in with a quicker and better answer than me, Lizzie. That's always the way with me these days - a day late and a dollar short...

yes now you mention it, it is a hybrid so thats why the seeds dont work - doh! Fairly obvious once its thought about.

I'm tryin to grow everything from seeds as it's rented house & garden and can't spend money on something I'll probably be leaving behind in a year. I dont mind time & effort but not cold hard cash Ive already got a van load of plants that have to come with me each time we move so no more pots says the husband

I've got a pink one if you want some root cuttings of that - you'll have to remind me in September though!!

I have a customer who is over-run with the stuff. Let me know later in the year and I'll dig you a load up!

She says, if you plant both White and Pink in the same garden they all come out the same colour, but I can't remember which!

I have nenies that have self seeded in my patio...darn things.....and before you say they're off shoots, there's a large pond between original plants and the patio, and some have also appeared in the front garden so perhaps they can be grown by seed by letting nature take its course.
