Can anyone id this cactus?

this cactus has been in the pot.. well its not really a pot its just a..thing that i made at school so its been in it a least 5 years lol its got quite a bit of brown around it so i dunno if its dying... was just wondering if it was worth repotting because im guessing the small pot is restricting its growth since its only grown about 3 inches or so since i bought it.

Looks like a Chamaelobivia (peanuts catus)? Does it have red flowers.

it hasnt ever flowered its only about 4 inches high thats why i was thinking of repotting it the pot that its in now is about 2 inches deep

I would repot it using John Innes 3 compost. To get them to flower you need a cold winter, they will tollerate -7C. Overwatering causes them to rot.

As above - I have a 'thing in a pot' in the outhouse that has burst into masses of orange flower because of neglect!

Nordmead, I think it's worth repotting, the pot you've got it in at the moment looks a bit too wide & shallow. I'd pot it in something like a 3-3 1/2 inch plant pot so that there's just a little bit of space between the cactus & the sides & mix some grit into the compost & put some around the top of the pot. Cacti like to be well drained & not stand in water, you don't need to water it in the winter but should start watering a little around March/April & it should eventually flower in spring/summer. You can buy cactus feed but like Rogesse, mine seem to thrive on neglect!

also just bought a what i think is a prickly pear.. any chance it'll fruit in a few years or is that just being too optimistic

It'll probably be a lot happier in the new pot, your new cactus looks lovely in the 'Mexican' pot, I think you might have to wait for it to get a bit bigger before it fruits though!

I'd leave it in that pot for a while, I think cacti like to be a little potbound to produce fruits & flowers.
The first cactus pic. is a rebutia, I've been told the second is an echinopsis but I'm not sure, it looks a bit like a mamillaria too.
I found a site with lots of pics. but you have to have an idea what yours is or look through each type until you find a match.

oh i think i might have planted some of those i got a pack of assorted cactus seeds so i have no idea which ones ive sown.. i think i might be getting a bit addicted to this

One of the members on here 'Nick the Grief' knows a lot about cacti but he only looks in occasionally now. I haven't ever grown any from seed but I'm tempted now you've wetted my appetite! These are some of my cacti & succulents I photographed last year, I don't know the names of all of them though.
