They were a gift from our new neighbour in return for borrowing our mower, but they were given to him and he has no idea what they are.

I'd go with marigold- but is the 2nd piccie of the same plants?

Thanks. The pics are of the same plants from different angles.
I never remember to grow marigolds in time for my toms, and they looked a little different to the cheap ones I had bought, so I hadn't immediately recognised them as such, but now you mention it I can see the family resemblence. I didn't have enough for all my tomatoes so they will come in useful.Today's mistake is tomorrow's compost...
