  • Is it the year of the Yucca

When at my parents recently both LadyWayne and I noticed that the Yucca plant they have (around 12 ft high) was in bloom and giving off a heady Lilly-like scent.

Then, when in Devon last week, we noticed them everywhere - in bloom, smelling lovely.

Have we been ignorant to these plants? My Dad reckons they only flower every so many years - but surely not all of them in the country at the same time?*

*obviously if they flower every year then this is a possibility.

They must like this weather - it's been the same over most of the country.

But is it like this every year - have I been blind/scentless previously?

Not sure about scent - but I've spotted some wonderful examples in bounteous flower round my way. Many flower anyway - but this year many gardens with them in have caught my eye.

I wonder if the harsh winter has given them a reminder to deliver of their best soonest whilst they can - or meet their doom?!

mine suddenly started flowering last year. i'd not noticed any palm type plants flowering before that. It must be the heat

My daughter hates the smell and insists on calling it the "poo plant". It is very strong!

Are these the same variety of yucca that one has as a houseplant? Mine has recently outgrown the room and as it was a multi-stemmed one I performed some surgery and now have four smaller ones which are not looking too well. Perhaps I should just have planted it out permanently in the garden.
