I thought it was a Nasturtium

It started growing early in the year - the leaves looked like Nasturtium leaves, but then they started to get brown spots/bumps on them and I thought it would not be long for this world. But it continued to grow.

It's now about 4ft tall and has little flower buds - similar to Foxgloves, in that they are several and stacked up a main stem. One of them is not far from blooming and from what I can see has blue/black petals.

Any ideas?

Oddly, I also have another plant that I thought was a Nasturtium, but that has stayed low to the ground, but is yet to flower...

Now that's a possibility - but I don't remember planting that out. I remember planting out the Nasturtiums - they flowered last year. But I would have planted the Hollyhock out at the same time, and they certainly didn't flower last year.

Hollyhocks don't tend to flower in their first year. Lucky you getting a suprise!

Like Llamas said, they are biennial. It is perfectly possible that I mixed up some of the seeds in the packs *blush

I've grown the black hollyhock too and it's lovely. Surprisingly some nasturtiums I had last year have come up again this year as seedlings despite the coldest winter in Scotland for 18 years!
