Moss in grass

I say 'in grass' because by no stretch of the imagination could it be called a lawn.

The problem is that there is a huge amount of grass (well over 1000sq mtrs)and in quite a lot of places it it almost all moss.

Scarifing is a possibility but it is going to take forever. What I need is some sort of moss killer that doesn't cost a fortune. I know that lawn sand would work if I could get I but I can't.

Any suggestions please.

Lawn sand is just a mixture of sulphate of ammonia,sulphate of iron and sand. Very cheap to make....if you so wish!

Personally I would look at the underlying reasons for having the moss in the lawn in the first place.
These could be poor drainage,heavy soil,shade or a mixture of the lot!

Until the underlying problems are ascertained and cured you will be wasting your time scarifying as you are in effect creating a seed bed for weed infiltration and further moss growth.
It could be likened to 'pruning' the moss which like most pruning leads to increased vigour!

Fence it off and put the Chooks in there. In a year's time it'll be fine!

I think that the reason is heavy soil, clay, and poor drainage. It is after all a mown field. Can't put the chooks on it as it is not possible to fence it off so think I will make the lawn sand as a start. What quantities should I use?

Lawn Sand Recipe

• 19 parts by weight of fine dry builder's sand
• 3 parts of sulphate of iron
• 7 parts of sulphate of ammonia
