Taking cuttings

Hi,
I'm a complete novice at this gardening malarky, although totally loving the experience ..... and was hoping for a bit of advice. When do you take cuttings for example from roses, what sort of thing can you take cuttings from and is it difficult. Some of the things I have read on the internet seem to say just cut a bit off, dip it in rooting powder and stick it in soil ..... it can't possibly be that simple???

Hi Llamalady.

With roses it is that simple, except I didn't use hormone powder. You will need to wait until later in the year to take a cutting from one. See these two links as they may be more helpful.

You can take cuttings from all types of plant, depending on the plant will depend on when you take the cutting and the nature of the cutting. There is a Carol Klein book called Grow your own garden, and helps explain this and other ways to propogate more plants from those you may already have.

We tried cuttings last year for the first time from a buddleia and a mock orange blossom. Took nice looking shoots, put them in the powder and planted them in good compost. We now have 4 new orange blossoms to plant out and 9 10 inch buddlieas.

Will definately do it again.

I've only really grown veg, but really want to make more of my gardening. Have grown some herbs from cuttings, but have a big rose out the front which I'd love to take some cuttings from.
