Just found out at four o'clock today that on Wednesday a digger is coming to remove half of one of the flowerbeds at work .Thing is, in the half that is going to be removed there are about 20 rose bushes . Is it a good time to move them ? and whats the best way of giving them a fighting chance when they are moved?

I guess it doesn't matter if it's a good time or not they've gotta go!!! If they haven't been already cut them back so they won't suffer from wind rock then gat as much of the root ball as possible and transplant them asap. I wouldn't put them anywhere that has been freshly mucked if poss just in case it burns the new roots off. then make sure they don't suffer through lack of water in the summer ( I would think they are ok at the moment) If it's any consolation I've got to move my 4 ( my wife hates them and she's finally noticed I snuck 4 in to the garden) so they are of up the lottie with me

As with planting anything...water it in well. If you water well at the planting stage, you can get away with less watering later in its life

Am planning to persuade the digger driver to did a trench about 2 foot wide and deep and then dig out the roses one by one with the digger and replant in the trench and then backfill it with soil+ compost+fertilizer.There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. The best show of roses I ever saw were planted in the central verge of a dual carriage way. They were absolutley magnificaent as clean as a whistle. I can only assume it was all the Exhaust fumes that kept the Aphids & Blackspot awayOriginally posted by Two_Sheds View Post

Update - Roses Safe
When the digger appeared on site a quick investigation revealed a fire hydrant in the corner of the flower bed.The engineer decided that it would be to much hassle to move and lower it so the flower bed and the roses stay - for now.

Straight out of where they are, and straight into their new home - that way you get minimum shock or drying out time. Also try to get as much as root as possible - Good luck!Comment

I know your problem is solved Beefy, but to all grapes for future reference, you should not plant a new rose where an old rose has already been sited - the new rose may develop rose sickness - apparently the old rose will have built up quite a lot of nasties that it has naturally accquired an immunity to, but the new rose will just be bombarded with these when you put it on the same site.Rat
