Someone else asked this and if I remember correctly the reply was that the staking would be most important as they get sort of top heavy and blow over. I suppose that if you had a good big bucket and were able to 'tie' them to a fence or something it would work. Good luck. Otherwise, plant spuds or dwarf beans in a bucket - they get something to eat at the end of it too.
A large pot or bucket with holes in the bottom sited next to a downpipe from the roof would be ideal, then you can tie the sunflower stem to the drainpipe. Good luck! A friend of mine had one like this 2 years ago and it grew to around 10 feet tall.

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

I had considered it in the past, but they need loads of watering and feeding and I have to admit that I am just too lazy to make the effort when the lottie produces huge flowers with total neglect!!
"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple
See the white plastic tray Nicos it holds about 2 gallons of water and lasted for about 4 days between waterings

If I wasn't convinced before, I am now - they are beautiful, Beefy! My office looks out to a very convenient down pipe to attach the sun flower to, and it will improve the view considerably!
You've got your answer Dutch. You can grow giant ones in a bucket, if you water them and put in a place where they can be tied to something to stop them blowing over. Good luck. I'm sure your children will love them.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
I like the idea of sunflowers and crops and I think Im going to buy a load of those pop up garden tidies (Morrisons selling huge 1's for £1.99 each) and use them for potatoes sunflowers and a layer of mixed leaves for colour!
Im setting myself one rule......... everything I grow in my small back yard has to be practical (IE I can eat it!) and who knows, I mat finally get my little girl to eat some veg without her turning her nose up !
Hi all - I've decided not to grow my sunflowers in pots this year. I've heard that the roots are like tap roots - and once they get stunted. If you're going for a giant sunflower, I would reccomend sowing direct. :/
