  • Another flowering shrub ID please

Sorry - no picture, but I think I can describe it adequately. And yes another garden visit - this time near Edinburgh.

Height and spread 2m plus. Growth - open, long horizontal boughs. Flowers - white in a 75mm diameter cluster like a hydrangea with larger flowers on the outside, spread along the upper side of the branch; in fact I thought it was a bush hydrangea but my books all indicate that these have much larger panicles and flower much later in the season. Leaf - simple, pale to mid green, ellyptic/ovate, 50 to 75mm long. Two specimens were seen, one not in flower with shorter leaves.

    Many thanks
    Rob

Do you think it could be one of the Viburnums? Have a google and see... maybe V Plicatum (sp?)
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

You're the winner - well done and very many thanks. I hadn't thought of viburnums. V. Plicatum Tomentosum to be really accurate. Google shows good pictures, and my book's description fits perfectly.

Interestingly V. Plicatum is of garden origin and is sterile - it must be worth growing for it's flowering only as V.P. Tomentosum is the original from China and Japan and sets to produce red berries turning black, along with red leaves in autumn. Sounds worth having. The garden I saw it in (Kevock nr. Edinburgh) has specialist planting with autumn colour one of the targets.

      Many thanks again
