  • Rhododendrons in Chook-Manure Compost?

I bought a lovely rhododendron today. Researching the type of compost it needs, I found out they Rhodies are acid-loving.

So, would my chook-manure based homemade compost be suitable? It's going to be planted in a huge pot for the patio for now.

    Thanks

I wouldn't, it is really unsuitable for lime hating plants. To give it a good start I would buy some ericeaceous compost and try to avoid watering with tap water if you live in a hard water area. Rain water only if possible - Chicken manure / RHS Gardening Advice

Thanks Scarlet! That was a really useful link.

I don't have anywhere to site a water butt to collect rainwater, so I'll use the filtered water we drink instead.
