  • Fast climber for the house

I am looking for a fast climber which can be used up the front of the house. I was looking at Russian Vine, will this damage walls? Any other suggestions for fast climbers?

Russian Vine will try to take over the world, never mind just your house. It is also known as Mile a Minute (for very good reason)

DO NOT get ivy, its a ruddy nightmare. I paid a fortune to get rid of it. It came back, with a vengeance

Not ivy OR mile a minute - I have both at my new house and you can watch the damned things growing!

A Montana? Jasmine? Honeysuckle? There's a few threads on this with some great suggestions in, in this forum already

Thanks for the replies. I think I will get the Clematis Montana and possible Honeysuckle... are these ok to plant now?

If you can find them in pots, they're fine to plant now.

Fast growing is always a big ask: they don't know when to stop. Russian Vine in particular is an absolute nightmare. It doesn't stay where you plant it ~ it comes up through cracks in paving, through the lawn, through next door's lawn ...

I put some virginia creeper on the front of the house [anything to disguise the disgusting frontage]. Looks good in the summer and autumn, not so good in winter obviously, but you do have to chop it away from the windows, and i will at some point have to borrow a ladder to keep it out of the guttering.

Depends which way your wall is facing. For North walls a climbing hydrangea is hard to beat. For South it's a Wisteria everytime for me. Clematis Montana is fairly quick and scented but you will need vine eyes and wires. Solanum scrambling through a climbing rose another option. Russian Vine is quick but destroys mortar in brickwork as does ivy once it gets a foothold. Steer clear IMO!
