  • Busy Lizzies - a bad year

Not sure if anyone else heard Radio2 last night. There was a chap from the RHS (I think - though he may have been an advisor to) saying that there's a nationwide problem with them - a kind of blight/fungus.

Don't grow them myself, but just in case anyone is thinking they're having problems - you're not alone.

Yes, I heard it - it was Guy Barter. One of my customers has been complaining about that very problem.

Glad I've seen this. My BIL grows them for my sister every year and he was only saying to me yesterday that they seem to have flowered early and withered away this year.

        Busy Lizzies (Impatiens)
Are being struck down by downy mildew which thrives in mild, wet summers.
The UK busy Lizzie market could be dead in 5 years time unless something is done, said Paul Hansord,
managing director of Thompson & Morgan.
T & M Young plants. Impatiens downy mildew is a fungal disease, that often appears as a white powder on the underside of leaves.

I think he suggested growing your own from seed, but I was driving at the time, and not really paying attention, as I don't grow them.

I was too - though I had the misfortune of being stuck on the A1 betwix the two Biggleswade junctions for a hole hour due to an "oil spill" by the Biggleswade North roundabout. Though I'm not bitter about it.

I heard about that spill on the radio - veg oil, I think. A bit of a waste really, could've been made into bio-diesel...
