  • Caring for a fuchsia

    Hi guys,

Don't often venture into here but I need a little advice.

I've always loved fuchsias and two years ago I picked up a tiny little plant (6cm tall at most) at our village plant swap and it was simply labelled 'Upright Fuchsia'. I planted it into our main flower bed, in pretty much full sun from 11 am onwards, beside the Olive tree and left it to grow. Only it didn't, well not very much anyway and it certainly didn't flower

Last year it didn't show its' face at all and so I decided it had died off over winter.

Then a few weeks ago I noticed a little plant growing up beside the trunk of our now dead Olive tree (the snows did for it last November but the birds love to use it as a perch so we've kept it). At first I thought it was a weed but, on closer inspection, I began to suspect that maybe just maybe the Fuchsia was growing again - unlikely but, hey, I decided to leave it and take a chance

    Now it looks like this:

With my very, very limited experience and the help of the plant encyclopedia OH bought several years ago, I did think it may be a Tom Thumb but the leaves are too pale for that one, I think, so I've no idea really.

Anyway, the whole point of this long winded post is to find out what I need to do in terms of pruning etc once it's finished flowering. So any advice from you more experienced grapes would be gratefully recieved.

    Many thanks

Don't prune it till next Spring when it starts growing again. Then cut it back fairly hard.

I cut back this year's wood to ground level during winter. Then feed with blood, fish and bone in spring.

Fuchsias don't like full sun ~ they are more of a woodland plant (dappled shade)

The long branches in the first pic look very much like Lady Boothby

My Fuschia is still flowering! It is in a container outside my front door, it seems to like it there. It is getting very bushy and big now. Should I split it up now or wait for the warmer weather?
