  • How many bulbs in 1 container?

    Hello friends,
As part of getting ready for spring, I have ordered all my spring bulbs and they have arrived. Can you experienced lot help with some guidance on container planting -

    1. How many daffodil / tulip bulbs in 1 pot (I have 15" and 10"). I did some reading on various website and some say around 10 bulbs in 15" pot and 8 bulbs in 10" pot....does that seem right? or can I cram more in....
    2. In terms of depth there are suggestions to plant in layers with 1.5" soil below the bulb and 1" above the soil. Is this correct?
    3. Planting 10" deep stops tulip from multiplying thus giving a better display as all energies are spent on flowering.

In the past I have at times not had a good show from spring bulbs ...not sure if I was not planting them deep enough or spaced well apart ...hence trying to seek some help this time.

    Rgds

I plant all my flower bulbs with at least 2x their depth of soil on top of them (so if your bulb is 1" tall, make sure there's 2" of soil on top).
I do layer my bulbs in containers, with the biggest at the bottom, getting smaller nearer the surface

I've never planted tulips 10" deep - it must take them months to surface?

The packs tend to say how far apart they need to go from each other - perhaps 2" apart, at a guess? Check your packaging

I would think that planting them that deep would stop them growing and flowering, never mind multiplying.

They did a trial with layered bulbs on Beechgrove (didn't do very well) so they're trying again. Might be worth having a look at their website? I grow bulbs quite close together in containers, but never touching.

I must be psychic - they were planting bulbs (albeit in small containers for forcing) on Beechgrove last night.

I accidentally planted some miniature daffs too deep and the poor little things just about managed to get their heads above the soil! They did look funny flowering on a 1" stem
