nope, depending on the type of pea some will support themselves some will support late. However, if you have lots of birds espcecially blackbirds of pigeons it would be better to plant some twiggy stick to stop them from nibbling away your plants or even worse pulling up the whole plant.

Growing up canes
I too, like Jax, have grown my sweet peas up canes with my french beans and peas (don't grow them with mange tout, can be some nasty mistakes!). Always worked well and can make a great screen.
I have even grown them with clematis and have had no trouble.
