It looks like Fireweed or Epilobium angustifolium. Were the seeds fluffy ones like dandelions? If so then it is an thug of the first water, both from runners and from seeds spread. Very pretty, but take care with it.

        It's VERY invasive!

It appeared in my garden and I thought - oh that's quite pretty, leave it. But it tried to take over. I've eradicated it (with difficulty) from my front garden as it was spreading so much. Runners went under the path from one side to the other and now it is all over the neighbour's border too. The fluffy seeds have made it round the side of my house and there are plants springing up all over.

hi, NO, its not Fireweed, Epilobium Angustifolium, googled and saw pictures, not the same, and not invasive after a year. i see it growing in well kept gardens, and in public gardens, where they only plant bought-plants. anyone knows? still love to know... maybe knock on someones door who has it in their garden! lol.

            I think it's centranthus rubra.

Hi Flummery, i think its spot-on - its Red Valerian like you say, Centranthus Rubra, cause the leafs look different when in flower and is on the stem of the flower a lot. And as the description on the link says, it can survive the dry, like i said, i found it in full sun, in small space for the roots by a wall on the pavement. Cool, sorted! thank you.

quote heebiejeebie, "very invasive" - i better get rid of it! thats a shame, it has a pretty flower and need little care.

It does seed everywhere but it's a pretty plant. It has some medicinal properties I believe, used to be used in salves etc. Sorry about the latin! I have Saga moments when I can't remember the English for things - I remembered when I was shopping this afternoon. However, with the latin, at least you can look it up. If you love it, have a go. The seedlings are very easy to identify so you can grub them out but you might not want to have to pay so much attention to your flower beds!

flum, well, i was thinking, a lot of plants are invasive, but in a way thats nice, my buddleia is, my mint is, another ground cover plant with purple flowers, but rather that than too much hassle over a plant that eventually dies and wasted my money. rather pick out the unwanted ones. i didnt find the red Valerian too invasive after one year, there are no new ones, compared to my mint, well, thats a different story. lol. the garden is big and empty enough to cope with more of them coming up.

Hi B & G I have centranthus in my garden, have done for about 4 years it didnt really spread much at all...............until this year. Now its every where. I just went round pulling all the seedlings out that I didnt want, it didint really take that long. This year i'm going to dead head it and see if that helps a bit.

Valerian is/was used to calm folks down as well according to my Herbal book. There is a white flowered form as well. It will seed everywhere but like Inca's mum says just dig out the ones you don't want
