Hi,
My neighbour has recently cut down her huge Cherry Laurel, which, whatever your view (i'm not keen myself), i think is a shame as the birds always seemed to be in it and the flowers are quite pretty. I found a seedling growing behind my shed which must have fallen at some point - who doesn't love free plants? So i did a bit of research and it seems perfect to add to the shady part of my garden as it will tolerate full shade and poor soil conditions. But i also came across a less desirable trait...
"It... chemically inhibits the growth of seeds in the soil underneath it, so weeds are unable to grow. Don't plant any precious bulbs or other small plants next to a cherry laurel hedge, they will be affected too"
Buy Cherry Laurel Hedging Plants - Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia
Now, looking into it i can find no evidence this is the case. There's studies which mention Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) and Camphor Laurel (Cinnamomum camphora), but nothing of Prunus Laurocerasus except on the website above.
So, will it be safe to plant my little salvaged seedling or should i just bin it? If i were to plant it i would put it in a pot anyway to hopefully contain it's growth, would this do?
Thanks for any help
