  • what to plant in a whiskey barrel

right, i've got a large 1/2 whiskey barrel that i'd like to plant up for a show of bright colour all summer. it'll be in a sunny ish spot.

any ideas about what to plant that'll give me a long display of colour until next autumn?

presumably something taller in the middle with smaller stuff spilling over the sides might be good. any good reliable combos i should consider?

We have a half barrel beside our front door.
In spring it has daffs plus tulips,

    In summer: a mix of:
    surfinias round edges.
trailing petunia, small antirhinum, mesembryanthemum and a couple of geraniums in the centre.

Top 20cms of soil is seed compost plus water retaining get plus garden compost...

Really colourful and virtually maintenance free except occasional watering and dead heading.
