  • perennial sweet pea

A few weeks ago I sowed some perennial sweet pea seeds, but none have germinated. I never have any problems getting the annual sweet pea seeds to germinate, so if anyone has any tips for the perennial ones, I'd be grateful.

I think they need to be frozen first (as they would be if they were left to self seed) Someone told me to gently rub the seed with sandpaper or nick the casing to break dormancy but, having said that, I have never managed to grow any so...

They don't need any special treatment but do take a lot longer to germinate than annual ones - no idea why. When I've grown them in the past I've just been on the point of throwing them away when they've popped through the soil.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

OK, I guess I'll give it a bit longer and if that doesn't work, I'll try one (or all!) of the scarification techniques. Thanks.

I've also had problems and this has been fresh seed. I might try a few methods, and also pop a few into the heated prop once all the other seedlings are out.
