  • What do I do next to my carnations?

Grown some carnations from seed in fibre pots - a first for me, but having acquired an allotment last May, Mrs Vince thought it might be nice to have a supply of cut flowers for the house so selected, amongst other things, some carnations.

Pleased with the germination rate and all plants are nice and healthy but they are crawling over the compost rather than growing upright. As I said, they all look nice and healthy and some are 4 or 5 inches long now.

Should I be supporting them at this early stage? If so how do I do that for such small plants? Or will they grow more upright once I plant them out and perhaps earth them up....?

Also when will I be OK to plant them out at the lottie?

Lots of questions, but having got this far, I don't want to ruin some potentially nice plants.

'florists' carnations don't do great outside, they're better in the gh (imo).

Pinks (dianthus) are tougher and do fine outside though. Have you pinched them out? How to grow Carnations
