  • Climber / Screening advice

Hi there, I've just moved house and my garden backs onto a lorry / tractor yard. Annoyingly you can see parts of their cranes in the garden which kind of ruins the seclusion!

I'm looking to very quickly grow climbers up the wall. I will put trellis up but even then you'll still be able to see the lorries so I'm looking for something that will go over the trellis and still add some extra height on top of that. The walls are part shade and get morning sun until about 12:30. I don't know what my soil type is but there are roses, ivy and forsythia growing in it already.

    To summarise, I'm looking for:
    - Evergreen climber
    - Grows quickly
    - Part shade
    - Adds height on top of the trellis

Any advice on what I should get?

In my last house I had an evergreen honeysuckle ( growing with a scented honeysuckle)
Nice thick leaves all year- grew up the 6' fencing , through the 2' trellis above that and a good 2 ft into thin air at which point I trimmed it just above the trellis height.
Not sure which variety but it grew quickly and dense enough to do what you have in mind...and more!
No scent which is why I grew it intertwining with a scented variety.

"L. henryi: This is an evergreen, vigorous honeysuckle with purplish-red flowers between early and mid-summer, followed by purple-black berries. Height: 10m (33ft)."

    This name rings a bell
I can well believe it could reach 33ft! mine fanned out beautifully

oh - and hello- welcome to the Vine!

Don't go for the "fast growers" ! They don't know when to stop and you'll be forever trying to keep them pruned to a reasonable height.

Avoid Russian Vine like the plague that it is.

On my shady fences I have pyracantha: easy to prune/train onto a fence, and it got to 6ft tall in just 3 years. It's now filling out nicely, gives me white flowers then colourful berries for the birds. Being thorny, it's also anti-burglar

That's the base. Growing alongside it for a pop of colour, I have clematis and passion flower
