  • When to sow bluebell seed?

    Hi there,

I'm experimenting with lots of new plants at the moment, and have recently bought a load of bluebell seed from ebay. I've found lots of good advice and tips about sowing and growing, but not much on timing.

Could somebody please tell me the very best time of year to sow bluebell seed?

    Many Thanks.

    English ones or spanish ones?

The time to plant spanish bluebell seeds is never. If you want some please come to my house and dig up a few sack fulls.

For English bluebells I THINK it would happen naturally around late July early August, really should take more notice of what happens in the front garden

English/Welsh bluebells are still flowering here so there are some months to go yet.
If they are Spanish bluebells, burn them, quickly.

Just found a clip from Gardeners world - sow in spring, in pots of John Innes no 2, where you want them to finally grow. It will take a couple of seasons for them to show, then you can plant on to their final positions which need to be moist, shady and lots of organic matter.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thanks for the help folks - if nothing else, my forray into the world of bluebells has taught me that people don't like Spanish bluebells!

I have bought English bluebell seed from a respected retailer.

So, late Summer is looking like a good time folks?

As they grow naturally in my front garden I can watch them for you & shout when the seed heads dry & open if that would help

The seeds would have been collected last year and, in the wild would have fallen to the ground and be germinating, perhaps now. So should they be sown asap as they will be a year (at least) old in the Autumn. I'd do it now!

Interesting you should post that Jeanie, wifey was only last weekend saying what a poor show of flowers we were getting compared to the massive amount of leaves in our pot grown from saved seeds.
