  • Purple, yellow and variegated plants - love em or hate em??

Personally I love them. I dont know what I would do without my
golden leaved philidelphus to brighten up a shady spot.
My black elder "black lace" looks stunning against my silver leafed eleagnus.
Everyone asks me what it is and wants on. It makes a fab backdrop to
my intensely bright coloured flowers eg lychnis coronaria and dahlias.

I like all colours, shades and variations in my garden - I have just repositioned pinks and lavender and admired how the pink's silver-green/grey foliage offsets the lavender's 'greener-green' even before either have come into flower. I'm growing dahlias for the first time from seed this year - any tips?

I like variety in leaf colour however don't like gold leaves and pink flowers on the same plants. Also some heucheras have strange leaf colours and look like they need a good feed!

I especially love silver, pink and purple leaves. I bought a lovely purple/black leaved ipomea recently that Im trying to grow up the drainpipe next to the back door!

I like anything that contrasts what is surrounding it. A bright acidic green against a dark shrub or in a dark corner. Silver foliage among greens. Spikes among rounded leaf shapes. It all makes for a more interesting garden, in my opinion. However, like most people, I suspect, I have plants I don't like. I seem to have inherited a few 'non-favourites' in my current garden. These include Sycamores galore Choisya and Jasmine, the latter of which have been allowed to 'do their own thing' previously and a selection of other shrubs and plants, that I actually really like, but they were planted in totally the wrong place, with little or no consideration to their mature size.

Mostly, I'm okay with those colours but it depends on the individual plant. I don't mind variegated Vinca major, but with the smaller leaved minor I feel the variegated ones often have a dusty look compared with the green. I like some yellow-leaved plants such as my golden oregano, but I've never liked Choisya 'Sundance' at all and I spade-pruned a golden Thuja which was inherited from the previous owner of the house. I can't think of any purple leaved plants I dislike, though and have black lace elder and a purple Heuchera in my front garden. I'm fond of contrasts too.

                You OK, Chris??
I like variegated and coloured leaves because, unlike flowers, they are there all season so form an integral part of the colour scheme. Evergreen (ever-yellow/red/etc) ones are particularly useful for brightening up a winter border.

I'm with you on this one -there's also a variegated weigela that looks a bit odd in flower...............

So Purple, yellow and variegated plants? They're not all good and they're not all bad would have to be my answer.
As always it's a case of getting the right plant to go with it's neighbours and location - not always easy for the less 'artistic' like me...................sometimes I can only tell that I've got it soo wrong after it's planted and growing
