Mesembryanthemums - prolonging the flowers quest

Hello there,
I love these plants but they take so much deadheading! What do other folk do to keep them flowering all summer long?? I'd love to know...

I spent days deadheading these last summer and it didn't prolong it for much. I later read in a book - Christopher Lloyd I think - that in his experience they didn't respond to deadheading and simply flower themselves out after a few weeks whatever you do.
