  • Sweet Peas 2012

I have two lots of sweet peas growing, in 2 different parts of the garden.

Both are 4 ft high or thereabouts.

    Not one flower yet.

What the heckings is going on?

Mine ground to a halt for weeks, and have just put on a spurt in the last few days. They're less than 3ft, but are forming flower buds now. My perennial sweet peas, on the other hand, are looking great - strong growth and a lot bigger than last year's clump

I have 2 wigwams one pinks and one lavender shades...but all old scented ones.
They're about waist high and have just opened their first flowers

They're not wafting their scent though, I spose it's the weather to blame, they need a bit of dry warmth to waft

A chap was interviewed at RHS Hampton and he said it's a terrible year this year for sweet pea growing with no flowers as they hate cold and wet. My Cupani are flowering in the garden, but this time last year I couldn't cut them enough. This year I've had one vase of so far.

Mine are in troughs and well over 4 ft and have flowers on. Never grown them before so i reckon it's just beginners luck with them. However, two of the 4 troughs i sowed with them, had the plants in them munched something silly, so those ones were nowhere near as fortunate.

Mine are just under my chin which makes them nearly 5ft high at the moment! So far Ive cut one flower, but I can see plenty more buds which have just started developing so hoping for lots more flowers soon.
I dont know what type they are coz they came free in a magazine and Ive lost the packet!
Although my parents who live about 30 miles away cant seem to get them taller then a couple of feet and no flowers at all yet.So ...???

Mine are less than 2ft high but are flowering. They are from seed I collected last year from the free Sweet Peas that GYO Mag gave - not idea what they were now tho!

But you are all right - this time last year I couldn't cut enough flowers, and remember taking a bunch of the delicious smelling things to the OH's Mother in Law who was in hospital. It was the last smell (not of hospital) she had, as she died the same day. Not quite as sad as it seems as she wasn't the nicest of old ladies and she had been ill for a while.

Hey ho! there's the memories for you (sorry guys) . She is also the reason I could give up work and we can follow our dream to Devon (when the house is sold). So sweet peas will now always have interesting memories for me.

Sorry again, this wasn't what the thread was about, but its just come pouring out! Must be the great audience I know I'll get. Tx for listening....

Well, I'm not one to boast..... BUT mine are looking great! I sowed them indoors in January, planted out in April and they're about 5' high or so and have been flowering since early June. I go out every day and pick them. They are a mix of the old fashioned ones, Cupani, Painted Lady, America and so on.

                          I'm up north as well.
