  • Anybody know what this is?

I've spotted this growing on some local waste ground, which people in the nearby housing use as a huge compost heap. I think it's beautiful, but dunno if it's a 'weed'/wildflower or something that someone's thrown out of their garden....

Agree- we used to call them 'pennies' because of the shape of the seed head- very pretty autumn/winter plant.

          I agree as well.

It's good for insurance as well cos everyone knows Honesty is the best policy ...... well someone had to didn't they

It isn't a weed as such and as Nicos says the seed heads are much sought after by flower arrangers

I know the one - it has sort of papery looking discs as seed heads? I love that, didn't realise it had such pretty flowers as well. I'll look out for it going to seed then, and collect a few.
            Cheers chaps!

You won't need to collect the seeds - just leave a coule of the plants intact with the seed heads and it will happily self seed all over the place - at leat it does up here

Funnily enough I just noticed some honesty growing on a rubbish heap outside of our allotments today! Think I might snaffle a bit as I am growing quite a few flowers for cut flowers and it is as sought after as Gypsophilla by flower arrangers!

This is growing on some waste land with public footpath running through it, bout half mile from my house. If it's a wildflower, I won't be able to uproot any of it? So, it'll have to be seed collection. I've looked on www.naturescape.co.uk where I've bought wildflower plugs/seeds from before, and they don't seem to have 'honesty' or 'Lunaria' listed...

Loads in our garden. The self seeding is a PIA.

It's not a wildflower Sarah. It's a garden chuck-out or escapee. You could dig it up if you wish. I think it will flag a bit though. Incidentally, if you collect the seeds, save half. The plant is biennial and if you want continuity you need to sow 2 years on the run. I had it in my old garden and always meant to save some seeds for the year when they were just rosettes of leaves. Never got my act in gear!
