  • Dustbin pond

Not sure where to put this really, it doesn't seem to fit under wild life (or only in them becoming fish food )
I have a dustbin that collects the rain water from the top of my chicken run, and the other day I noticed mosquito larvae wriggling around. As a spur of the moment thing at the garden centre I bought 3 small goldfish 99p each, and one small koi for secret ammount (yes I know, he will grow big, just not too quickly i hope). I also bought 6 oxegentaing plants. Now the bin only gets the rainwater from a corrugated plastic roof, so should be reasonably safe. I floated the bag on top, as you do with an aquarium, and let the fish out last night. Today the water has gone pea green, after being clear for such a time. Will the plants grow lanky trying to find the light, or should I put some bricks or stones in to raise them nearer? On the plus side, I haven't any floating bodies, so they made it through one night. Could I get a water lily do you think?
When we were kids we sunk a preserving pan into the ground to make a pond for some goldfish we won at the fair. They were never fed or had plants to oxegente the water, but lasted around 5 years. I do intend to use up Kissykits fish food that we still have after she lost her last fish, so mine will have a bit more luxury, if they can get through the murky water stage. Typical, it was clean yesterday morning.

I'm no help I tried putt ing our fish into a very nice outdoor pond - even put some wire over the top to stop the dog from dancing in it, and the birds from fishing in it. Out of 7 only one made it out alive.

Son No2 said was it wise with the cats, but as they have no where to sit, as the dustbin top is of course high, and there is nothing for they to sit on, the only way one will get fish for dinner is if they swim for it, and I reckon they will be more concerned at getting out they hunting by that stage
