  • Transplanting pansies

I sowed about 100 pansies earlier in the summer in 1 inch modules. The hope was to have winter plants to take over from the summer bedding. They were soon out-growing the small modules. I didn't have the pots or time to repot them so I transplanted them into an empty bed at the plot. They are doing great and starting to flower. So I'm wondering now how they will do if I dig them up and take them home to plant in the garden? Anyone ever transplanted/moved established pansies like this? If it's a bad idea I'll just leave them where they are as it's a nice splash of colour on the plot.

I bought modules of pansies and violas last autumn. They were a bit potbound, and I was just putting them in for a little bit of early winter colour. Just admiring them yesterday - they are still going strong, flowered the entire winter, rain, hail, snow, frost, no rain. Never seen such happy long lasting plants.
So my opinion is have a go! They do seem pretty hardy.

Thanks a lot! Turns out the packet is mixed, great spread of colours and size of flowers Was worried about root disturbance as they are in soil now and not modules. I'll move a dozen and give them a week to see how they do and then hopefully move the rest as I can.

I move pansies (well, violas) all the time, because they self-seed in inconvenient places. However, don't do it on a hot day, do water them in well, and try to take a bit of a rootball of soil with them too
