  • Bulbs in... wellies :o

    Sooooooooooooo...

Inspired by something I heard on GQT a couple of weeks ago I really want to plant some bulbs in a range wellies and line them up outside my shed on the allotment.

I've never grown flowers from bulbs before.

As they won't have much room and I don't want them toppling over I'm thinking of small, low, things like crocus, hyacinth, snowdrops etc.

I haven't figured out how I'll get the holes in the bottom for drainage yet but assuming I get that sorted would it be possible to let the compost in the wellies dry out at the end of the season and just move the wellies (bulbs and compost in situ) into the shed when necessary instead of taking out the bulbs and re-planting them again?

Also any other suggestions for what would work well in a small container (aka wellie!) very welcome!

I've seen tomatoes and peas grown in wellies. Seems a shame to jab holes in good wellies for drainage though so I hope yours are old ones. Old leather boots are another option.
You could also punch a hole in the top of the wellie and hang it from a hook, like a hanging basket

I haven't done it, but if I did I would put stones in the bottoms for drainage & weight. Then soil, then bulbs to various depths, then soil on top.

Puncture the wellies in the sole with a skewer or a drill bit?

      some at RHS Hyde Hall

and this is just one example I found on Google Images ... there're lots more

My plan was a trip round the charity shops and/or freecycle!

I fancy different sizes and colours if possible!

            Wellies IN welly Road

I was the person who asked the question on GQT about the wellies. "Welly Road Gets the Boot In!"

To make holes in the bottom, I either used a pen knife a drill or a hot soldering iron.

We collected the wellies via our community shop and 3 Welly Wheelie Bins at the local recycling plants in Wirral. Welly Road gets the boot in | Facebook

Love this idea! I grow lobelia in OH old work boots. He knows now not to throw them away. I brought a big bag of daff bulbs reduced to 75p yesterday , think I'll plane my old split wellies up with them.
                Thanks for the inspiration.

I think it was someone talking about Welly Road on Gardeners Question Time that inspired me!

Sadly I've had no luck getting hold of any wellies so I shall keep am eye out during the year and see if I can get something sorted for next year.
