From your description Bazza, I think they're probably gillygone. What were the roots like when you planted them?

Thanks Rustylady, advice much appreciated. I’ve just been outside to retrieve one by torchlight (hoping the neighbours weren’t watching . I selected the smallest (there were 12 in all, some quite chunky, some quite small) – photo of the one attached. For the photo I’ve washed the root (which seems reasonably root-like!) but the tops of all 12 have gone yellow, limp and lifeless and look distinctly like gillygones (temperatures have been chilly at night but we haven’t had hard frosts). Near the 50p (there for scale) there’s still a clump of the growing medium they came in: it’s almost as thick as clay you’d make pots with, really solid and sticky when wet…. I guess I may have injured roots separating them. I’ve planted them in a much lighter compost in a couple of large containers, praps that’s another reason?

The chap on the market that I bought them from (£1.50 for the packet of 12 so didn’t need to take out a mortgage) is not a rogue but a local nurseryman so if they all perish I’m sure I can ask what went wrong… What do you think? I notice you said Treat ‘em rough, I might have overdone it! Many thanks for any suggestions. bb.

PS Have replaced ailing specimen so it can die in peace rather than under TV lights!

I've no idea what the problem is as I just plonk mine in and away they go (don't you just love it when others make it sound so trouble free?).

They are of the brassica family and can suffer from club root. Better to grow your own and then you know they are clean.

Huh, I got dead ones much cheaper that that!

Last year's wallflowers were in pots and being sold off at half price from a Garden centre; some of them are in flower again now! Worth keeping your eyes peeled - but don't go wall-eyed
