  • Best way to treat climbing rose

    Hi all
Advice needed, please ! I have recently purchased a climbing rose Rosa 'Pauls Scarlet'. Seeems like it's fairly sturdy. The only thing is, it has what looks like a wax coating on the stems. Presumably, this is to protect it during transit?
Do I leave this on the stems? I plan to grow it up a wire fence with supports. Does it need to planted a specific distance away or tilted in ? Help !!

Is it grafting wax? It tends to drop off eventually.

It could be VVG..... It seems to be over both stems, right down to the roots.

I leave it on. The branches it's on tend to die off, but new ones shoot from other places.

Prune the rose so that the buds are facing the fence you're training it to: any that are pointing away from the fence, cut off

Plant it about 12" away from the fence, just normally, don't try to plant it at an angle. It's the pruning that decides which way the branches go

I've got it on some roses I bought from Pound land. It's like a greeny colour all over the stems. As the roses have begun to sprout its cracked off and is chipping away nicely now. I pull off any flaking bits once they become loose

Well, the climbing rose sprouted like you wouldn't beleive! It's been in the kitchen on the side for 3 wks in the bag it came in as I can't get it in the frozen ground I carefully watered it. It even produced a bud! Friday it wilted over, and wilted and just died Anyone got any ideas as to why?

at a guess there wasn't enough food in the bare roots to keep it going any longer. possibly also too warm in the kitchen therefore sprouted earlier than it should have done therefore used up it's stored energy.

Bare roots are supposed to be kept at least damp. It should have been put in a pot really, until you were ready to plant it out
