  • Why?

    Hi,
Hopefully have attached successfully a photo of my hyacinths coming into flower. As you can see in the photo the flower head is not as should be - that is a closely knit mass of small fragrant flowers. Instead the small flower are widely spaced and few. Can anyone venture a reason for this please? These bulbs were bought from a reputable source were of a generous size and only planted last autumn. Therefore the bulbs have lots of stored nutrients. They are planted in good fertile soil. Why the poor quality???

Thanks for your input Two Sheds. But these small flowers that mass together to make the flower head of a hyacinth are not gonna be a mass??? There is so few of them and so widely spaced. Or am I wrong and as you say not fully open yet. Am I gonna look a fool lol?? Will be interesting to see.

Just thought that if they are meant to open 'sparsely' like that, but when fully open are a tight knitted mass then fool am I for jumping in so quickly. However that was a nice quote from RedThorn which spares me a bit. lol. In a week or more's time I will know whether they are poor sparse blooms or not. If not then happy days. If so I have a couple of thoughts as to why they have bloomed so poorly but I don't want to mention them yet and give people preconceived ideas.

it is early day's in the flowering so wait awhile and see then.

if you look at this pic you can see the early flowers are more spaced out

Could they be young/immature bulbs? Just a thought...

Thx Glutton 4, but they are definitely not young immature bulbs. Bought off Parkers last autumn and I bought the bigger sized bulbs they had.

Just wait for some nice warm sunshine then and the flowers will open properly.

I have a couple of dark blue ones on the allotment that grow year after year, and although the flowers are a little sparse the colour is lovely and the perfume heavenly.
